Assessment

Page Overview

This page contains the outlines of a variety of teaching strategies that I used to prepare my lessons.

Definition

In education, the term assessment refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students.

While assessments are often equated with traditional tests—especially the standardized tests developed by testing companies and administered to large populations of students—educators use a diverse array of assessment tools and methods to measure everything from a four-year-old’s readiness for kindergarten to a twelfth-grade student’s comprehension of advanced physics(ASSESSMENT, 2015).

My third goal is to use different formative assessments to assess and measure students' achievements and progress. During my previous experience, I had discovered that I used limited tools for the formative evaluation. In this teaching practice, I had plans to use different strategies for assessments to recognize the effective learning process and observe the students achievement.

Reflection

During my teaching career, assessment has played a critical role in ensuring that my student's learning needs are being addressed. In particular, assessment for learning has provided me with ongoing information as to how my students are understanding new concepts.
When I first started teaching, the importance of the assessment was as a part of the teaching and learning process was not considered a priority. However, when I was introduced to formative assessment. I realized how essential it was to continually monitor student learning using various techniques. The formative assessment developed the student's skills and knowledge(Reflection Essay of formative assessment, 2021).

Example of the formative assessment

Checklist analysis (CLA) is a technique that can be used to identify and manage risk. The checklist is developed by listing items, steps, or tasks and is then analyzed against criteria to determine if the procedure is completed correctly. The checklists should be developed using historical information or knowledge gained from similar projects in the past.

The use of checklists and achievement charts is effective in supporting student learning. These tools encourage students to play an active role, not only in their assessments but in the learning process.

The simple act of establishing objectives and criteria with your students allows them to progress because they will have a better understanding of what they need to do to reach their full potential.
